Voice of Youth Advocates
(December 1, 2005; 0-439-72455-4; 978-0-439-72455-5)
Felix is back to his normal life, after two amazing adventures in the alternate world accessible only through the Divide. He falls into trouble, however, when a schoolyard bully, Rhino, steals Felix's magical lamp, brought back as a souvenir of his time in that world. Rhino is taken captive by the djinn of the lamp, who insists that Felix and his otherworldly friend, Betony, return his lamp (containing Rhino and the djinn) to the magical world beyond the Divide. Trapped within the lamp, Rhino discovers an ancient bewitched jinx box with deadly intentions and deceptive lures. Felix and Betony return to the world of magic, in a quest to rescue Rhino and defeat the devious plans of the jinx box. This final book in The Divide trilogy wraps up the series in a unique and satisfying fashion. Readers seeking a book reminiscent of the Harry Potter books while remaining completely original would be well advised to begin this series. Fans of the first two books, The Divide (The Chicken House/Scholastic, 2003/VOYA August 2003) and Back to the Divide (2004/VOYA February 2005), will enjoy the concluding volume, but those who have not read the other titles may find it somewhat confusing as there is minimal backstory. The vocabulary is challenging and might frustrate struggling readers, but confident readers will find it thought provoking and well written. The conclusion is unexpected and original; there are no cookie cutter endings to be found here. This book is recommended for school and public libraries, particularly those with a robust group of science fiction and fantasy readers.-Sherrie Williams.
SLJ KAY, Elizabeth. Jinx on the Divide. illus. by Ted Dewan. 368p. Scholastic/The Chicken House. 2005. Tr $16.99. ISBN 0-439-72455-4. LC number unavailable.
Gr 4-8–In this final installment in the series, Felix, 14, is back in his own dimension and ready for life to return to normal. However, when Rhino, the class bully, discovers the brandee's lamp that Felix brought back from the Divide and the brandee within, trouble begins. Rhino is taken hostage by the djinn and later set loose in the magical dimension linked to our own by the Divide. It isn't long before he hooks up with the japegrins in an explosive way. Fans of the first two books will find this episode another action-packed ride across dimensions. Once again, Kay introduces a wide range of characters and subplots that will challenge readers to remain focused. And, as with the previous books, the characters all seem slightly underdeveloped. Still, if action is what they seek, Jinx will keep their eyes glued to the pages.–Lisa Marie Williams, Fairfax County Public Library System, Reston, VA
