Each piece begins with a note on the new skills it teaches and why they matter. The work is done entirely by hand, with hand tools and precious metals, and covers about thirty standard forms of commercial jewelry in mid-20th-century traditional designs. The first quarter introduces precious metals, general workshop procedures and tools, with sections on alloying gold, pouring ingots and working platinum. The projects include a hinged bracelet, a hollow bracelet, square linkages, mesh and rope chains, cylinder and box clasps, and a wire brooch soldered in investment. Five ring sequences cover the solitaire, pierced bezel, tube, coronet and cluster ring. Settings are built, but stone-setting is not covered. Color photographs show the work in close-up.
