From a review by Aidan O.Donnell: "Born in 1894, William Stanley Sykes was an anaesthetist in Leeds before the second world war. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Greece for some years. At the end of the war he returned to civilian life to find that anaesthesia had evolved in the intervening years, and he considered his skills to be obsolete. He decided to retire and devote his life to the study of anaesthetic history and equipment. His studies led him to write about points that interested him as he went along. The result was a collection of essays of enormous erudition. The topics were discursive and seemed to be random; but by deviating from the well trodden paths of the history texts Sykes gave us a fresh angle. The essays include a brief account of his own experience as an anaesthetist in a prison camp and some astonishing case histories, such as David LivingstoneÂ's own account of his mauling by a lion." From an AI overview: "Essays on the First Hundred Years of Anaesthesia (Volumes 1 & 2), written by Dr. W. Stanley Sykes and published starting in 1960, offer a critical, witty, and deeply researched historical review of anesthetic practice from 1846 to the mid-20th century. These essays move beyond simple history to scrutinize the successes, failures, and, often, the fatal mistakes of early innovators. Key Aspects of the Essays: Critical Evaluation: Sykes examines the development of anesthesia, often criticizing the ignorance and inefficiency of early practitioners. Focus on Failures: The collection is notable for documenting "dead ends" and failed ideas, such as unsuccessful inhalation devices and, in one instance, a dangerous, explosive machine. Key Figures and Discoveries: The essays cover important milestones, such as the early use of chloroform before James Young Simpson and the development of the laryngoscope. Historical Context: The work provides insight into 19th-century medicine and the rapid evolution of surgical practices after the introduction of ether in 1846. Volume Details: Volume I was published in 1960, and further essays were compiled to form subsequent volumes. The books are considered a 'gold mine' for medical historians and an entertaining read for anesthesiologists interested in the evolution of their specialty.". Reprint of the 1960 original. Hardcover.
