Urban Geography: Social and Spatial Dynamics of the City introduces urban geography from an urban political economy perspective. The book emphasizes the dynamics of capitalist cities, exploring the complex politics of inequality in an engaging and approachable way. Addressing a wide range of topics concerned with both production and social reproduction in the city, it explores both social issues such as poverty and inequality as well as environmental issues such as climate change. Initial chapters make a case for why cities are such an important locus of study for urban geography and trace the origins and historical development of cities globally. From there, subsequent chapters review the urban economy and urban hierarchies, engaging with questions of urban residential space, segregation, social ecology, and gentrification. The relationship between the state and the urban structure is investigated, as well as the issues of environmental problems, air pollution, climate change, and water shortage. Finally, urbanization in the developing world is examined considering the legacies of colonialism and formal and informal urban economies. Barney Warf is a professor of Geography at the University of Kansas, USA. His research and teaching interests lie within the broad domain of human geography. Much of his research concerns economic geography, emphasizing producer services and telecommunications.

He has studied a range of topics that fall under the umbrella of globalization, including New York as a global city, fiber optics, the satellite industry, offshore banking, international producer services, and the geographies of the Internet. He has also written on military spending, voting technologies, the U.S. electoral college, and religious diversity. He has authored, co-authored, or coedited seven books, two encyclopedias, 32 book chapters and more than 100 refereed journal articles. Currently, he serves as editor of The Professional Geographer, co-editor of Growth and Change, co-book review editor for Dialogues in Human Geography, and edits a series of geography texts for Rowman and Littlefield publishers.

He has served or serves on the editorial boards of the Geographical Review, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Growth and Change, Professional Geographer, Urban Geography, International Regional Science Review, and Geografiska Annaler.
