Synopsis

Genetic Breeding and Aquaculture of Shellfish covers the global status, research advancements, and future trends in shellfish genetic breeding. Addressing the challenges and solutions related to shellfish genetic breeding and aquaculture, this book is structured into two main sections, genetic breeding and aquaculture. Early chapters summarize the basic biology and ecology of shellfish before delving into the theory and research of genetic breeding practices. Latter chapters apply theory to practice, offering practical guidance on mature and novel cultivation models and technical directions for stakeholders and technicians working in shellfish cultivation industries. Readers will find this to be a resource that bridges scientific innovation with practical application to navigate the progress of shellfish aquaculture in the 21st century and contribute to the sustainable development of global aquaculture. It is an essential resource for students, academic researchers, industry scientists, and aquaculture technicians spanning shellfish research and aquaculture sectors.

À propos des auteurs

Dr. Shi Wang is Director of the MOE Key Laboratory of Marine Genetics and Breeding and Deputy Dean of Ocean University’s College of Marine Life Sciences. He obtained his BSc in Biotechnology and his PhD in Genetics from the Ocean University of China and conducted his postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Wang’s research focuses on bivalve genomics and molecular breeding, and his laboratory develops novel genomic technologies and breeding methods for bivalve mollusks by studying the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms of important traits in these critical aquaculture species.

Dr. Zhenmin Bao is Honorary Director of the MOE Key Laboratory of Marine Genetics and Breeding and Director of Ocean University’s Laboratory of Tropical Marine Germplasm Resources and Breeding Engineering. He obtained his BSc in Marine Biology from Shandong Ocean University and his PhD in Aquaculture from Qingdao Ocean University. Dr. Bao’s research focuses on shellfish genetic breeding and aquaculture, and his laboratory has established a series of advanced genetic breeding methods including BLUP, MAS, and genomic selection. The lab has cultured several resilient breeds of scallops with enhanced growth rates, muscle quality, and stress resistance for aquaculture production purposes.
