Synopsis

Thermal Plasma-Coupled CCUS: Exploring Sustainable Solutions for Climate Change explores using thermal plasma with CCUS to combat climate change and promote sustainable development through waste management and carbon capture. This important text covers fundamental aspects of thermal plasma, conventional CCS technologies, plasma-coupled CCS, renewable hydrogen integration, lifecycle assessment, the role of catalysts, current global scenarios, future prospects, and the social, political, and ethical aspects of CCS in the context of combating climate change. This novel resource guides researchers and policymakers and provides insights and practical solutions for waste management, carbon capture, and sustainable development in the energy transition. This book offers a comprehensive understanding of the role of thermal plasma in Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), a technology that involves using biomass to generate energy while capturing and storing carbon dioxide emissions produced during the process, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. The book considers environmental and economic assessments, as well as social, political, and ethical aspects related to the adoption of this technology, which will ultimately play a crucial role in addressing the problem of climate change by offering a sustainable pathway towards curbing CO₂ emissions and promoting a circular economy where waste is managed as a resource. Thermal Plasma-Coupled CCUS: Exploring Sustainable Solutions for Climate Change delves into the innovative application of thermal plasma with CCUS to advance sustainable development. This unique text offers valuable insights into the opportunities, constraints, and practical implementation of thermal plasma coupled CCUS systems and practical solutions for addressing climate challenges, making it an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, and industry experts seeking to drive positive change in the global fight against climate change.

À propos des auteurs

An avid teacher, researcher, consultant and author, Dr. Vineet Singh Sikarwar is currently serving as a Scientist in the Czech Academy of Sciences. He has an established teaching and research profiles in the field of energy and environmental engineering. He possesses more than a decade of promising research and teaching career in Belgium, Czech Republic, China and India, which enabled him to develop a broad skills base in all aspects of biomass conversion, waste valorization, thermal plasma, climate change and carbon capture, and solar desalination systems. He has been involved with renewable energy education for nearly a decade and has conducted a fair amount of research in this discipline. His research and academic work experiences at Ghent University, Czech Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague and, Rajiv Gandhi Technological University, India, have provided him with the opportunities to undertake high quality research work and to contribute significantly to energy and environmental engineering discipline and, to publish widely in prestigious high impact journals.

Guido Van Oost for many years led the research unit Nuclear Fusion. He is the founder of the EU Erasmus Mundus "European Master in Nuclear Fusion and Engineering Physics" (FUSION-EP) and of the Erasmus Mundus "International Doctoral College in Fusion Science and Engineering" (FUSION-DC). As an emeritus professor, he still maintains a strong link with the research unit, both in research and education.

As a researcher in the field of controlled magnetic fusion within the framework of the EU fusion programme, Guido worked at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, the Research Centre Jülich (Germany), Ghent University and the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (IPP.CR), resulting in more than 650 publications. He is also active in the field of plasma treatment of waste, in collaboration with IPP.CR. In addition, from 2015 to 2019 he was a guest professor at the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" (Moscow, Russia) and from 2018 to 2020 also at the National Research University "Moscow Power Engineering Institute" (Moscow, Russia).

Guido obtained various scientific distinctions: Honorary Professor of the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, Silver Commemorative Medal of Charles University in Prague, Ernst Mach Honorary Medal for Merit in the Physical Sciences (Czech Academy of Sciences) and a Medal of the Czech Technical University in Prague for outstanding contributions to the development of the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering.

Dr Rankejar is a postdoctoral researcher affiliated to the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis and works at KU-Innovation Park in West campus. He is currently working on ADM's project on the catalytic conversion of sugar derivatives into value-added chemicals. He has been appointed as the new Communications Director of KU Postdoctoral Association. Prior to joining here as a postdoc, he designed and taught an elective course 'Introduction to Hydrogen as an energy carrier' for even semester of the M. Tech in Energy Technology course at the Centre for Energy Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University, India. His past research has focused on sustainable hydrogen production using steam reforming of alcohols, its comparison, analysis, and catalyst development. He is an expert in handling the instruments for the characterization of catalysts. He also worked on molten salts and conducting polymers in the past.
