Eric Karel van Douwen died on July 28, 1987. His obituary appeared in Topology and its Applications, 31 (1989), pages 1-18. Eric Karel van Douwen was a world figure in General Topology. His work is still prominent and ranges from Boolean algebras and topological groups to set theoretic topology. In the present volumes the reader finds all his published papers. Eric Karel van Douwen posed many questions in his papers, some of which were solved. The open problems are collected in Chaper 4 together with any new information available.
