Synopsis

Increasing numbers of natural and technological disasters taking place worldwide are threatening the global community. These events are a challenge to the scientific and technical community to provide means for monitoring, prevention and protection. Optical science is utilized extensively in these areas, yet there has been no comprehensive conference on this topic on a worldwide scale. OWLS (Optics Within Life Sciences) was founded in 1990, as a non-profit scientific organization based on individual membership, to serve the need for interdisciplinary information and communication of specialists in optics as well as in medicine, biology, environment and cultural heritage. The second in its series of International Conferences on Optics Within Life Sciences has been dedicated to the key topic "Optics for Protection of Man and Environment Against Natural and Technological Disasers". This publication is the outcome of that symposium.
