Louisa May Alcott was a legendary American author in the nineteenth century. Alcott's parents were well known transcendentalists in New England and she grew up with other famous authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. With classic works such as Little Women, Eight Cousins, and An Old-Fashioned Girl, Alcott remains one of the most widely read authors in American literature. Under the Lilacs, published in 1878, is a classic novel that centers around two young girls who are having a tea party with their dolls when they stumble upon a young boy and his dog who have run away from the circus.
Louisa May Alcott was both an abolitionist and a feminist. She is best known for Little Women (1868), a semiautobiographical account of her childhood years with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts. Alcott, unlike Jo, never married: ''... because I have fallen in love with so many pretty girls and never once the least bit with any man.'' She was an advocate of women's suffrage and was the first woman to register to vote in Concord, Massachusetts.
