hardcover. Etat : Good. Photographs By Charles And Josette Lenars (illustrateur). Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only. hardcover w/dj. Etat : Sehr gut. Photographs By Charles And Josette Lenars (illustrateur). Auflage: First U.K. Edition. 192 Seiten Very good, clean copy. - The human body is a living mirror held out to the world. Nude, masked, painted, or adomed, it has the power to attract, charm, captivate, frighten, or seduce. Each civiliza- tion and culture has found its own unique ways of decorating, and thus celebrating, the human form. - - In his introduction to this endlessly fas- cinating volume, André Virel traces the his- torical, sociological, mythological, and psychological significance of adomment, with particular emphasis on the mask as a means of camouflage or transformation. He covers the four major themes: seduction, threat, caste, and ritual. Using examples from the four continents, with special atten- tion to Africa and New Guinea, Virel shows us the seductive powers of tattooing and body painting; the aggressive potential of masks; the hierarchical nature of costume, which is associated with class conscious- ness; and the elemental origins of scarifi- cation. His wide-ranging text includes a discussion of African tribal rituals, the Egyp- tian sphinx, the masks of Carnival and Mardi Gras, and the famous story of the Man in the Iron Mask. - - Virel's interest in primitive peoples began twenty-five years ago. After an ethnographic expedition to Guinea, he ob- tained degrees in anthropology and neuro- physiology from the Sorbonne. He is the author of numerous books and articles on psychology, mythology, and psychother- apy, and is a member of the Faculté des Sciences in Paris. - - Charles and Josette Lenars have traveled the world over in their photo- graphic quest for traditional arts, religions, folk customs, and archaeological sites of vanished civilizations. Their photo essays have appeared in Réalités, Connaissance des Arts, and elsewhere. - - This volume, with its wealth of striking illustrations, also contains a bibliography and an index. - - 212 illustrations, including 158 pages in full color - ISBN 9780450048197 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1240.
