Henry Fielding (1707-1754) began his career as a novelist in 1740 with Shamela (written as a negative response to Richardson's Pamela). The following year, he published Joseph Andrews, with which he anticipates his masterpiece, Tom Jones. His final work, The Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon, was published posthumously in 1755. Thomas Keymer is Elmore Fellow and Tutor in English at St Anne's College, Oxford. The History of Tom Jones is considered one of the greatest comic novels in English. The author introduces readers to a young orphan Tom, brought up by munificent Mr. Allworthy along with young Master Blifil. A complex story of love and misapprehensions, the narrative also comments on the English class structure and society. Misunderstanding between characters is created to add to the satire.

Paperback. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Tom Jones is widely regarded as one of the first and most influential English novels. It is certainly the funniest. Tom Jones, the hero of the book, is introduced to the reader as the ward of a liberal Somerset squire. Tom is a generous but slightly wild and feckless country boy with a weakness for young women. Piece(s) of the spine missing. Due to age and/or environmental conditions, the pages of this book have darkened.
