Hardcover. Etat : Fair. Published in 1940, The History of Musical Instruments by Curt Sachs is a seminal work in musicology that traces the evolution of instruments from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Sachs, a co-creator of the widely-used Hornbostel??achs classification system, presents a global perspective that bridges anthropology, art, and music. The book is divided chronologically into four major sections: The Primitive and Prehistoric Epoch: Focuses on early rhythm, sound association with primitive rites (fertility, life, death), and instruments like rattles and bull-roarers.Antiquity: Explores the instruments of ancient civilizations and how they functioned within their specific cultures. The Middle Ages: Covers the migration and evolution of instruments into Europe and the Islamic world. The Modern Occident: Chronicles the rise of the modern orchestra, starting from the Baroque period and concluding with 20th-century jazz and electric instruments. Copyright ?? Everyman.
