'As has often been said and as Dover's 'Greek Morality in the rime of Plato and Aristotle' has recently underlined, Greek forensic oratory offers a surer guide to the attitudes and beliefs of the majority citizens than does the evidence from historians, dramatists, and philosophers. Mr. Fisher would agree and rightly adds that the evidence of the law-court speeches is much less readily and clearly available at present in English. Readily and clearly available some of it now is. For the bulk of the book comprises translations of Lysias, Isaeus, Demosthenes, Lycurgus, and some inscriptions. (?) The translation reaches a high degree of accuracy, each extract prefaced with a commentary which illuminates what is to follow and focuses the reader?s attention on what is relevant. (?)
