The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (Dent Everman's Library 624)
Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
The first continuous national history of any western people in their own language, The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle traces the history of early England from the migration of the Saxon war-lords, through Roman Britain, the onslaught of the Vikings, the Norman Conquest and on through the reign of Stephen.
Michael Swanton's translation is the most complete and faithful reading ever published. Extensive notes draw on the latest evidence of paleographers, archaeologists and textual and social historians to place these annals in the context of current knowledge. Fully indexed and complemented by maps and genealogical tables, this edition allows ready access to one of the prime sources of English national culture. The introduction provides all the information a first-time reader could need, cutting an easy route through often complicated matters. Also includes nine maps.
Michael J. Swanton is Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Exeter. His extensive publications include translations of the epic poem Beowulf (1978) and a selection of Anglo Saxon Prose (1993).

Hardcover. Etat : Good. 300 pages. Light foxing across book edge. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is a collection of annals in Old English chroniclin g the history of the Anglo-Saxons. The original ms. of the Chronicle was created late in the 9th century, probably in Wessex, during the reign of Alfred the Gre at. Multiple copies were made of that original which were distributed to monaste ries across England, where they were independently updated. In one case, the Chr onicle was still being actively updated in 1154. Nine mss survive in whole or in part, tho not all are of equal historical value & none of them is the origi nal version. The oldest seems to have been started towards the end of Alfred's r eign, while the most recent was written at Peterborough Abbey after a fire at th at monastery in 1116. Almost all of the material in the Chronicle is in the form of annals, by year. The earliest are dated 60 BC (the annals' date for Caesar's invasions of Britain) & historical material follows up to the year in which the chronicle was written, at which point contemporary records begin. These mss collectively are known as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. N° de réf. du vendeur 6618ae
