People with strong obsessional doubt and fixed, overvaluedobsessional beliefs are often resistant to cognitive–behaviourtherapy and difficult to help. In over ten years of clinicalpractice with people with obsessive–compulsive disorders (OCD), itbecame clear to Kieron O′Connor, Frederick Aardema and Marie–ClaudePélissier that current cognitive explanations of suchdisorders are often incomplete.
Beyond Reasonable Doubt presents an innovative approach thatbrings together reasoning research, philosophy of mind andlanguage, and cognitive therapy to understand OCD. It outlines thedevelopment and validation of an inference–based approach totreating OCD, which addresses the inductive and often imaginarynarrative leading to obsessional inferences.
