The second edition of Spencer's Chemistry: Structure and Dynamics has been the most successful reform project published for the General Chemistry course. The authors have revised the text, by building on the recommendations of the ACS's Task Force on the General Chemistry Curriculum and suggestions from the adopters of the first edition. This innovative text provides a fifteen-chapter introduction to the fundamental concepts of Chemistry. A collection of additional topics at the end of each chapter allow instructors to supplement and tailor their courses according to individual need. Three major themes link the content of the book: the process of science, the relationship between molecular structure and physical/chemical properties, and the relationship between the microscopic and macroscopic levels.

Promote a spirit of scientific discovery
New scientific discoveries do not usually begin with models; they begin with data and a spirit of intellectual curiosity. In much the same way, Spencer, Bodner, and Rickard s Chemistry: Structure & Dynamics, Third Edition presents data, and challenges students to derive the models. Built on the recommendations of the American Chemical Society s Task Force on the General Chemistry Curriculum, this innovative approach helps students get a feel for how chemists approach problems in the real world.
This Third Edition is now revised with a new chapter on materials science and increased coverage of nuclear chemistry.
Here s how it works:

ISBN: 0–471–69941–1
Using a classroom–guided inquiry approach, this ideal accompaniment to Chemistry: Structure & Dynamics features 62 ChemActivities covering all the core general chemistry topics. These ChemActivities provide a variety of ways to promote a student–focused, active classroom.
Spencer′s Chemistry: Structure and Dynamics is the most successful reform project published for the General Chemistry course. The authors have built the text on the recommendations of the ACS′s Task Force on the General Chemistry Curriculum and suggestions from the adopters of previous editions. This innovative text provides a sixteen–chapter introduction to the fundamental concepts of chemistry. The material is supplemented by special topics at the end of each chapter. There are three major themes that link the content of the book: the process of science, the relationship between molecular structure and physical/chemical properties, and the relationship between the microscopic and macroscopic levels. Spencer′s Chemistry can work successfully in both small and large lecture courses.
With the addition of CATALYST mastery assignments to WileyPLUS, students now have the opportunity to develop even stronger problem solving skills and deeper conceptual understanding. CATALYST empowers students to develop the understanding of essential chemistry concepts needed to work problems they may never have seen before (as opposed to mimicking examples). They develop an understanding of how to assemble the information they need to begin more complex problems and employ strategies to move through them. This skill is absolutely critical in chemistry; students must be able to analyze and approach novel problems and work their way through them.
The Spencer text pairs nicely with Chemistry: A Guided Inquiry, 4th Edition by Richard S. Moog and John J. Farrell. http://www.wiley.com/college/moog
