Synopsis

The theory of plates is presented here as a branch of classical, three-dimensional elasticity theory. The book starts with a review of the notation and basic equations of elasticity theory, then presents basic plate theory and concepts of stress resultants, stress-strain, displacement relations, and equilibrium. Both vectorial and scalar methods are employed. The author goes beyond the standard classical treatments by offering new material on flexural deformation and shear. He also covers plate theory for both static and dynamic conditions, which leads to a discussion of instability theory. Numerical techniqes (finite element and finite difference methods) are included for the solution of deformation problems.
