This study discusses the role of stressful conditions and psychological experiences in the causation and maintenance of psychiatric disorders in childhood and adolescence. The book has been divided into three sections: the first considers events in the environment that may be thought of as stressful and having the capacity to change mental life. The second section deals with mechanisms in the individual for the appraisal of social adversities. The final part of the text discusses interactions between social events and psychological experiences as expressed in psychopathological states in childhood.
