9780471920588: Classical Novae

Synopsis

This volume has been developed to cover all theoretical and observational aspects of the phenomenon of classical novae, including relevant multi-wavelength material, and draws on the collected research of an international group of contributors in an effort to present a definitive textbook on the subject. The book begins with an overview of the general properties of novae, which includes a discussion of the accretion process in nova systems and the physics of the nova outburst. It progresses to optical data, relating to the major aspects of the nova outburst and to observations at other wavelengths. The observational data at radio, infrared, ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths are discussed in turn, followed by an attempt to place classical novae in the broader family of cataclysmic variables.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This second edition has been updated and revised and contains contributions covering important developments in this field, and reflecting on interesting insights into classical novae. The book examines thermonuclear processes, the evolution of nova systems, nova atmospheres and winds, the evolution of dust and molecules in novae, nova remnants and observations of novae in other galaxies. It includes observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma rays, and discusses some of the most important outstanding problems in classical nova research.

Revue de presse

'... a comprehensive description of the state of current knowledge of novae. It serves as an excellent introduction to the subject and is well referenced. Its articles are written by people who have made substantial contributions to the subject and it will be a first port of call for anyone who needs to know about these fascinating stellar explosions.'
