Synopsis

In comparison with global issues such as acid rain, global warming and depletion of the ozone layer, the environmental problems of urban areas (and Third World cities in particular) have only recently become a major item on the environmental agenda. Fortunately, during the last few years the causes of, and solutions to, such problems have become the focus for a number of research and political initiatives. In part, the focus of this volume can be seen as a contribution to the relatively recent body of literature concerned with the so-called "Brown Agenda". In another sense, however, the chapters reflect a concern for the complex interactions between people and their environments.
