Synopsis

This work seeks to increase understanding of the issues involved in risk harmonization and makes recommendations to improve the current unsatisfactory situation. As environmental laws and regulations have evolved in recent years, differences have arisen in the assessment and management of similar environmental risks by different government agencies. Such inconsistencies have had several serious adverse impacts. One is that resources may be required by one agency to reduce pollutant levels below those allowed by another. A second is that public confidence in the government may be eroded and thereby public support for environmental policies may also be eroded. There is a strong movement towards better use of resources in managing risks and this title should serve as a reference for understanding the reasons for current problems and how these can be overcome in order to ensure that risk is effectively controlled.
