Adherence is the term used to describe a person's compliance with a particular descriptive, for example, a rigid exercise regime when pursuing sport as a career. Adherence is affected by motivation levels, social support and the person's perceived value of the descriptive. This text addresses the issues of adherence relating to sport from different psychological perspectives. It focuses first on issues in exercise and physical activity: social influences, motivation in children, primary health care exercise promotion schemes, and exercise for clinical populations, for example those with diabetes, asthma or osteoporosis. It then goes on to look at these issues in relation specifically to sport - adherence to sport injury rehabilitation programmes, mental skills training in sport, the role of coaches and parents in adhering to sport, athletic counselling, and changing practices. Each chapter concludes with a useful synopsis of practical recommendations
