Captain James Greig was an influential figure in matters maritime and government administration in NZ's southern-most areas and islands in the early days of settlement. Captain Greig and his aristocratic Prussian wife arrived in NZ from Australia in 1862 and he was soon appointed assistant harbour master for Invercargill and Riverton, at a time when shipping was the country's only reliable transport system. After briefly returning to sea as a shipmaster he also led an expedition to the sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands to search for castaways. By 1886 he held pilotage exemptions for the New River Port of Invercargill, for Wellington and most harbours in NZ's southern reaches. He served as Bluff harbournaster before accepting a numberr of official appointments at Bluff, including resident magistrate, customs officer, register of births, death and marriages, then followed the magisterial and customs appointments on Stewart Island plus a number of other responsibilities, one being superintendant of large, new immigration barracks. Such were his powers that he became known as "King of the Island." Subsequently he led other expeditions to the sub-Antarctic islands patrolling for seal poachers, building and stocking castaway depots. One rescue, of stranded American sealers, led to him recieving a gold watch from the US President. These tasks saw him sail three or four times a year in some of the most dangerous and storm-tossed seas. He retired in 1886 and died 10 years later after a full, versatile, adventurous, productive and active life. This is an impressive biography of little-known Southern maritime pioneer. First edition of 1999 from Silverdale Publications, 196 pages, including two appendices, notes, acknowledgements, sources, bibliography and index, illustrated throughout with b/w photographs, some art, maps, diagrams and document reproductions.
