A member of the Tai Tokerau peoples of the north; of Ngai Takoto, Ahipara, and Ngati Warara descent. Maori Marsden was both an ordained Anglican minister and a graduate of the whare wananga of Te Aupouri. His writing explored pre-Christian theology, understandings of divinity and the Maori worldview, and his Christian faith and vocation. Active in various issues affecting Maori; selections of his speeches were published in 2003 through his estate as 'The Woven Universe: Selected writings of Rev. Maori Marsden'. Member of the 28th Maori Battalion (serial no. 810655). After World War II he became the first Maori chaplain in the New Zealand Navy.
