Synopsis

Winnie Meldon, daughter of a commander of the New Zealand Fencible Company, has lived in England, Canada and Africa but nothing has prepared her for the mysterious new country where she finds herself as the year 1847 draws to a close. A country of no land animals, only bugs, ancient reptiles and the millions of birds who reign supreme over the vast primeval forests. And home to the Maori people who decorate their bodies not with tattoos but with wild patterns carved into their flesh like living stones. Her friendship with a Maori boy her own age who trains birds to speak pitches the trio – Winnie, Rawiri and Kura the talking tui – into a land and sea chase after the raiders who have enslaved his mother, who may hold the key to a Meldon family secret. On their journey the pair must find ways to stay alive. Fortunately, for Rawiri the seas and forests are his living room and larder and they eat and drink well on their journey – the forests, fields, and seas yield an astonishing variety of food. We also follow the fortunes of the Meldon family. Father Edward, who faces a terrible dilemma – if he succeeds in tracking down the raiders he may find his own daughter in the firing line; mother Freddie, beset by anxiety; brother Bycroft, who has demons of his own, and manipulative step-grandmother, caring only for herself. Against them are the secretive ex-pirate John Quinlan, his fearsome assassin, the strangler Silky Stevens, and his Maori colleague, the cannibal gang leader Te Wahoe – clever people who kill without hesitation anyone, man, woman or child, who gets in their way. And who is the tall, bearded man who keeps showing up? Although a stranger, Winnie is nagged by the sense that she has seen him before. As their fortunes draw ever closer together, we have to wonder – do Winnie, Rawiri and Kura really understand what they have got themselves into?
