Articles that produce sound were probably the first item given to infants. The Merrian – Webster Dictionary define infant rattles – noun: an item that makes a series of short sounds when it is shaken. The infant rattle is classified as a musical instrument and a toy yet it is seldom mentioned in books on either subject.
The purpose of this book, with abundant photos will attempt to shed more light on the subject. Rattles of many different materials and photos will give us a chronological timetable of the rattle’s life.
Before we begin we must mention that adults used rattles. Almost all cultures used some form of noise makers. They were shaken with bells on poles, on belts and on their ankles. This use was for warding off evil spirits, for health purposes, or climate change. The shakers were called Shamans. More modern adults and teenagers have used rattles in dance bands and public holidays either by shaking or the revolving types.
Frances Densmore in Handbook of the Collection of Musical Instruments in the United States National Museum put rattles into four groups – rattles, clappers, notched sticks and sistra. We will mainly deal with infant rattles. The other types will be briefly mentioned.
Older children play with a Poupard or Marotte. It is a dolls head and body on a stick. Hidden by the body can be a musical box that plays a melody when twirled or shaken. The end of the skirt covering the body are usually bells.
Present day research points to the medical benefits of rattles. The sensomotor portion of the brain is stimulated by the sound. The infant looks towards the noise and seems to reach for the object. By doing this the hand-eye combination is stimulated. If crying, the child is so concentrated on their movement he/she usually quits crying.
