AT the request of some of the members of the Boston Association of Ministers I have agreed to prepare a paper upon Recollections of a Ministry of Forty Years, from Dec. II, 1854, to Dec. 11, 1894. I have been asked to give a résumé' of my ministry, 'and to speak of the men whom I have met, and of the churches and their work when I began my work, and of the hopes of to-day, when everything seems so vastly different from what it did in 1854.

The subject is a large one, and it would hardly be possible to condense forty years into forty minutes; and whatever may be said on the subjects suggested must of necessity be fragmentary, conversational, and perhaps somewhat too personal.
