In my own case I have resorted to a compromise, giving timely utterance when the inward pressure has been' severe and relief imperative, while. At the same time, showing consideration for others by allowing the results to remain hidden away in drawers and note-books.

An occasional peep or peer has been permitted to a few friends, on whose indulgence and discretion I have felt I could rely, and, if the stern resolution, on which I had rather plumed myself, has now broken down, I must invite them to take upon their own shoulders some portion of the responsibility and blame, since it is due to their friendly urgency that these callow owlets which I offer to Athens have been dragged from their snug obscurity and are now blinking and shivering in the light of day.

With respect to the form or mould into which I have cast my verse, it may possibly be noted with surprise that, though I have tried various measures, I have made no attempt at Vers libre,' which holds out so many attractions to the adventurous and in which the poetic fancy of the day seems to find itself especially at home.

I am aware of course that some graceful as well as many daring and surprising feats have been recently performed upon this partiar spur of Parnassus, and I have often reproached myself for being unable to do more than sit and gasp at them in admiring wonder, but these treacherous peaks and precipices are no place for stiff joints and rheumatic brains andare better left to the happy audacity which vanishes with youth. If my thin piping is to be heard at all, it must be along the beaten and familiar tracks and under the restraining influence of rhyme and the Old metrical conventions, however readily I may admit the superiority of those who feel that they can dis pense with these aids and embellishments.
