This book examines the contributions of the literary prophet Deuteronomy to the development of Israel's monotheistic faith and ethical ideals during the seventh century BCE. The author traces the theological and social revolution that Deuteronomy brought about, as it moved away from the polytheistic and cultic practices of the time. Deuteronomy's emphasis on the transcendent sovereignty of God, the importance of social justice, and the need for ethical conduct had a profound impact on the religious and ethical consciousness of the Israelites. It laid the foundation for the later development of Judaism and Christianity, and its ideas continue to resonate with religious thought and practice to this day.
