Excerpt from Slingsby and Slingsby Castle
Unlike the parishes of barton-le-street on the east and Hovingham on the west, both of which are of wide extent, and include many townships in their areas, the parish of Slingsby is small and compact, and conterminous with its township, some what similar in shape to the human shoulder blade. It measures about three and a half miles from north to south, and about a mile and a half at its broadest point from east to west; and has an area of 2570 acres. A supply of water being a necessity of life, we find most villages grouped around rivers or streams; so Slingsby, like Hov ingham, Gilling, N unnington, and the rest, has its stream or beck, Wath by name, so called from the Wat}; or ford situated4 slingsby and slingsby castle.
