Excerpt from Die Funktion des Parabolischen Cylinders
Dieser letzte Fall, sowie alle übrigen, in denen der Pol des Wulstes ein Punkt seiner Direktrix ist, sind deshalb von besonderem Interesse, weil der entsprechende Cylinder sich jedesmal noch nach einer anderen Richtung hin ins Unendliche erstreckt, der entstehende Raum also ge'wissermafsen nur einseitig begrenzt ist. Solches tritt unter andern auch ein, wenn der Wulst eine Lemniskate zur Direktrix und ihren Mittelpunkt zum Pol hat, und ferner, wenn die Direktrix eine Cardioide und der Pol ihr Ruckkehrpunkt ist; hier erhalt man als reciproke Fläche einen hyperbolischen map. Einen parabolischen unendlichen Cylinder. Um einen allseitig begrenzten, für die Lösung z. B. Der Potentialgleichung geeigneten Baum zu konstruieren, miliste man bei dem hyperbolischen Cylinder mindestens noch einen konfokalen' elliptiaehen0yiinder und ein Paar voii parallelen Ebenen, bei dem parabolischen Cylinder dagegen aniser den parallelen Ebenen mindestens noch einen konfokalen parabolischen Cylinder einer anderen Schar hinzunehmen. Dadurch aber würden die Oberflachen bedingungen ungemein erschwert werden; bei den wulstiörmigen Korpern ist dies nicht der Fall und diese sind daher den Cylindern im allgemeinen vorzuziehen.
