Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the genesis of fourteen saints' lives written by Osbern Bokenham, an English poet and Augustinian friar who lived in the fifteenth century. The author analyzes the sources that Bokenham used when writing these saints' lives to determine the extent to which he adhered to his sources and in what ways he diverged from them. The author argues that Bokenham, despite his claims to have closely followed the sources, took considerable liberties in his retellings, and often adapted and expanded his source material to suit his own purposes. The author concludes that this practice was typical of medieval hagiographers, who routinely adapted and amplified their sources to make their works more engaging and instructive to their audiences.
