The main text is complete and unabridged. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) is a collective term for scientific searches for intelligent extraterrestrial life, for example, monitoring electromagnetic radiation for signs of transmissions from civilizations on other planets. Scientific investigation began shortly after the advent of radio in the early 1900s, and focused international efforts have been going on since the 1980s. In 1960, astronomer Frank Drake performed the first modern SETI experiment. Drake used a radio telescope 85 ft in diameter to examine the stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. Philip Morrison (November 7, 1915 - April 22, 2005) was a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During World War II he joined the Manhattan Project's Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago, where he worked on the design of nuclear reactors. In 1944 he moved to the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, where he worked with George Kistiakowsky on the development of explosive lenses required to detonate the implosion-type nuclear weapon. Morrison transported the core of the Trinity test device to the test site. As leader of Project Alberta's pit crew he helped load the atomic bombs on board the aircraft that participated in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war ended, he traveled to Hiroshima as part of the Manhattan Project's mission to assess the damage. His research moved from nuclear physics towards astrophysics. He published papers on cosmic rays, and his 1958 paper is considered the birth of gamma ray astronomy. N° de réf. du vendeur 19596
