La Bhagavad-Gita, o Canto del beato, costituisce con le Upanishad e il Brahma Sutra il cosiddetto triplice canone dell'ortodossia hindu. È un'opera in versi - di alto valore letterario e filosofico - inserita, in un'epoca imprecisata, nel grande poema epico indiano Mahabharata ("La grande storia dei Bharatidi"). Pur appartenendo al poema, ha una sua propria storia, in quanto è dovuta, con molta probabilità, ad autore o autori diversi, di cui si ignora l'identità. Incerta è anche l'epoca in cui l'opera fu composta, anche se si tende a stabilire la data di composizione del nucleo originario intorno al V secolo a. C. L'importanza di quest'opera è duplice: poetica e speculativa. Da questo punto di vista la Gita rappresenta il punto d'incontro di diverse correnti filosofiche ed è stata perciò interpretata assai variamente dai filosofi indiani che l'hanno studiata e dai critici occidentali.
