A leader in the development of modern mathematics theory, Edgar R. Lorch (1907-1990) received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1933 and joined the faculty in 1935. He served as Chairman of Columbia's Department of Mathematics from 1968-1972 and retired in 1975; he was later named Professor Emeritus and continued to write and lecture. Dr. Lorch lectured in five languages and held visiting professorships at institutions in Europe, the Middle East, South America, Canada, and the United States.
Intended to provide undergraduate students with the background necessary for the study of calculus, this text by a distinguished mathematician offers a balanced treatment of theory and applications. Considerably more concise than most books in the field, it focuses on the structures of natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers. Each chapter features illustrative examples and notes. More than 1,000 exercises enrich the text, many with solutions.
