Synopsis

The Viking Great Army that swept through England between AD 865 and 878 altered the course of British history. From the late 8th century Viking raids on the British Isles were a regular feature of everyday life but the winter of AD 865 saw a fundamental shift that would change the political, economic and social landscape of Britain forever. Moving away from smash and grab raids for silver and slaves, leaving as swiftly as they arrived, the Norsemen began to stay over winter and become immersed in the heart of England, and English politics. The Viking Army was here to stay. This critical period for English history led to revolutionary changes in the very fabric of society and the economy, including the growth of towns and industry, while transformations in power politics would ultimately see the rise of Alfred the Great and Wessex as the pre-eminent kingdom of Anglo-Saxon England. Drawing on the most up-to-date discoveries and the latest scientific techniques the authors recent research at the Great Army's winter camp at Torksey, near Lincoln, have revolutionized what we know of the size, complexity and social make-up of the army. Like all good stories, this one has plenty of heroes and villains, and this account could not have been written without the wealth of newly recovered evidence derived from metal-detectorists, including those who work with archaeologists and report their finds, but also the nighthawks. Unravelling as a great detective story the authors trace the movements of the Great Army across the country piecing together a new picture of Viking Age England in unimaginable detail, from the swords and jewellery they forged to the burials of their great warriors and the everyday objects they discarded. This book tells the definitive account of a vital period in British history.
