Synopsis

M+, Hong Kong’s new museum of contemporary visual culture, has been collecting objects made in or associated with Hong Kong, from neon signs and advertising ephemera to architectural plans, photographs and artworks, all of which offer new and insightful perspectives on contemporary life in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Visual Culture: The M+ Guide takes the reader on a journey through the collection and the cultural spaces of the city, telling the story of its past and present through the works of art and key landmarks in the city – some familiar and others lesser known. The book is arranged into three main sections, with the first focusing on artworks and objects that reflect daily life in the city; the second documenting Hong Kong’s built environment; and the final section concentrating on artistic perspectives and approaches reflecting the city’s unique outlook. Also included are five specially commissioned illustrations by local artist Don Mak, inspired by works in the collection. From the film posters of Wong Kar-wai to the masterpieces of vernacular culture by the calligraphic artist the ‘King of Kowloon’ and the photographs of Michael Wolf, this richly illustrated book demonstrates Hong Kong’s original and significant contribution to global visual culture and will appeal to anyone interested in the cultural history of the city.
