Synopsis

This volume reveals the work of an acknowledged master of twentieth-century art, a painter-poet whose work is of the modern era, but also strangely timeless. Forty large colour plates are accompanied by commentaries that demonstrate the mystery and beauty of the art of Marc Chagall.
Chagall developed a new pictorial language, one filled with fresh imagery that expresses emotions from the world of the unseen and the irrational. He went beyond the landscape, the nude, and the still life, the traditional subjects of painting, to new realms of perceptions from dreams, visions, and legends.
His amazing colours, inspired by Russian folklore and the work of the Fauves, seem to sing. Chagall widened the scope of painting, making fantasy images just as important as visible reality and giving even natural objects legendary and mythical associations. The poet Apollinaire called Chagall's work 'supernatural' and André Breton, the spokesman of Surrealism, wrote '. through Chagall and Chagall alone, metaphor made its triumphal entry into modern painting'.
Born in 1887 in Vitebsk, in Russia, where life was deeply rooted in jewish tradition and religion, the Russian folklore he had absorbed as a child provide the basis for much of the imagery in his art. This sense of fantasy, this joyous ecstasy that pervades his paintings, his stained-glass windows, mosaics, graphics and stage designs is what has kept his art from becoming static through the decades.
Werner Haftmann, former director of the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, has written an introduction enriched with personal insights into the artist's life, character and creative process.
