Synopsis

Georgia O'Keeffe (1881-1986) was a major figure in American art for seven decades. Throughout that long and prolific career, she remained true to her unique artistic vision, creating a highly individual style that synthesized the formal language of modern European abstraction and the subjects of traditional American pictorialism. This illuminating new book surveys O'Keeffe's complete oeuvre - drawings, watercolours and paintings from all periods - and explains her life in the context of her artistic output. The accessible text provides in-depth analysis of her most important pictures and highlights the recurring themes and images that unite her large body of work. O'Keeffe's relationships with fellow artists - particularly Alfred Stieglitz - are also explored, and candid extracts from her vast tranche of correspondence are quoted to provide greater understanding of her personality and her thoughts on art. The book, which incorporates current scholarship and benefits from the recent publication of the artist's catalogue raisonne, is accompanied by a full complement of colour plates and comparative black-and-white photographs.
