Tony Seddon was born and grew up in the southwest of Cornwall, and after graduating from art college in 1987 spent 12-years living and working in London, first for a multidisciplinary design consultancy, then as the senior art editor for illustrated book publisher Conran Octopus, a division of Octopus Books. In 1999 he decided that, whilst London is most definitely a nifty place to visit, he no longer wanted to live there, so he and his wife Sarah relocated to the south coast. After stints as design manager for The Ivy Press and Ilex Press in Lewes, and as art director for Brighton based visual arts publisher RotoVision, he now work as a freelance designer, art director and writer. His specialism is still book design and design for print but since 2011, starting with his own site, he has branched into web design and development for individuals and small businesses. He lives in East Sussex where his dogs are available 24–7 to provide feedback when he can’t decide which typefaces to choose. Published works authored by Tony Seddon Tony has authored and co-authored numerous books, including Images: A Creative Digital Workflow for Graphic Designers; Graphic Design for Non-designers; Art Directing Projects for Print; Typography Referenced; Thou Shall Not Use Comic Sans: A Designer’s Almanac of Dos and Don’ts; Draw Your Own Alphabets: Thirty Fonts to Scribble, Sketch, and Make Your Own; Greetings from Retro Design: Vintage Graphics Decade by Decade; and Type Teams: Perfect Typeface Combinations and Why They Work. He has also acted as both project manager and designer on numerous titles, liaising directly with authors, photographers and other freelance suppliers on behalf of the publisher.
What is a true 1950s look, as opposed to a 1930s or 1940s look? This book aims to address that question by thoroughly surveying the development of graphic design over the course of the 20th century. Timelines for each decade highlight key moments, styles and movements, while profiles of thirty influential graphic designers three per decade are interspersed throughout the book.
