Doisneau, festeggiato e sollecitato con insistenza da molti responsabili della stampa, dell'editoria, di musei e di gallerie, si stupisce con modestia di essere oggetto di tanto interesse. Poiché privilegia il rispetto degli uomini a detrimento della tecnica, è stato definito un fotografo umanista. Egli riconosce l'apporto del costruttivismo: rigore formale, audacia visiva (Les Halles) e interesse per il soggetto industriale (La luna piena del Bourget). Sa di dovere al cinema sovietico il suo gusto per l'opposizione dei piani (Autobus di notte), il confrontarsi e il loro scontrarsi (Il caminetto di Madame Lucienne). Ha preso in prestito dal surrealismo il collage, il fotomontaggio e gli spazi intermedi tra la vita e la morte.
