The dust jacket is in near fine condition. 8 ¾ x 6 ½, 446 pages, 30 ounces XX [From the inner flaps] "THE ATTITUDE THAT 'all history is European history' has become increasingly unsatisfactory as it has become easier to recognize the richness and complexity of the world as a whole. In looking at the historical developments that have contributed to the making of the modern world, and their effects on world civilizations, a world viewpoint has become essential. The first book in this three-volume history focuses on the year 1500. It covers Europe's expansion into the rest of the world and gives a picture of some of the civilizations that she discovered and the main points in their history. The state of geographical knowledge at the beginning of the fifteenth century and its development and dissemination are discussed in the first chapter, which traces the journeys that liberated Europe from medieval geographical theory, the reasons behind them, and the technical developments that made possible the first ocean voyages. The book goes on to give an account of the extent of contact between Europe and the wider world prior to this time. Apart from missionary zeal, the chief stimulus to this contact was the European demand for silks and spices. The experiences of travellers such as the Polos revealed that Europe was far from being the chief centre of the world, and this book gives a vivid picture of the other main civilizations. The Ottoman Empire is followed from its rise to its apogee under Süleyman the Magnificent, and an account of the history, geography, and evolution of man in Africa by a survey of the development of each region. A chapter on India traces the origin and ideological and political characteristics of both Hindus and Muslims, throwing light on their conflict and mutual influence, and their social and cultural societies, achievements. The traditions, agricultural and economic structures of the complex pattern of spice islands and trading empires of Southeast Asia, which lured the Europeans by their fabled wealth, are also discussed, while a detailed picture of Ming China shows not only her achievements but her approach to the rest of the world ? the extent of her influence emerges in the chapters on Viet-Nam and Japan. A vivid description is given of the Japanese 'Renaissance' of the sixteenth century, and the process of unification begun by Nobunaga and completed by Hideyoshi and Ieyasu.
