(see photos) Edition / Printing Notes First edition, first and only English-language printing; Pyramid Books V3670; March 1976; $1.25 cover price; 142 pages; cover art uncredited. This is the first and final English-language edition of this novel. The only other edition is a 1985 German paperback from Moewig, published under the title Die neue Menschheit (The New Humanity). Chad Oliver (1928-1993) was Chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin, and one of the founding voices of anthropological science fiction. Giants in the Dust was Chad Oliver's final science fiction novel; his two subsequent novels, Broken Eagle (1989) and the posthumous The Cannibal Owl (1994), were Westerns. Giants in the Dust argues the thesis that mankind's fundamental nature is that of a hunting animal, and that our progress from that condition has fundamentally deracinated us. Into a world where monsters ruled, Varnum ? last vestige of strength in the jaded race of men ? finds himself adrift in a land untouched by technology, with the chance for which all men dream: to shape history. Rated 4.5 stars by Fantasy Literature, which calls it Chad Oliver at the top of his game ? a richly anthropological science fiction novel from one of the genre's most underrated voices, in what is its first, last, and only English-language edition. An uncreased, pristine copy of an extremely scarce book that has never been reprinted in English in nearly fifty years. N° de réf. du vendeur 002352
