Herein is the unparalleled sea adventure Moby Dick; three haunting shorter works: "Bartleby," "Benito Cereno," "The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids"; and Billy Budd, Sailor, a compelling parable of the confrontation between good and evil. Herman Melville lived during an exciting time in the development of American literature. He, along with his contemporaries Washington Irving, Henry Thoreau, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, created a body of work that revealed a distinctly American character, no longer bound by European literary conventions. It is generally held that among these literary giants, Melville possessed the greatest natural gift as a writer. In his lifetime, however, only his early works~simple tales of adventure at sea that were typical of the genre~met with critical and commercial success. Succeeding novels and short stories, though densely rich in meaning, were poorly received, causing Melville to abandon his writing. He spent the remainder of his life traveling, working at a menial government job, and trying to disassociate himself from his bitter failure at capturing the public's imagination and respect. Among the works scorned by the critics at the time of its publication was Moby Dick. Now clearly recognized as a landmark in American literature, it is one of the most meticulously analyzed and hotly debated novels of all time. At the center of this novel is the one~legged Ahab, captain of a whaling vessel, who obsessively pursues the great white whale that maimed him. In his single~minded quest, Captain Ahab sacrifices the lives of his crewmen, with only one sailor, Ishmael, surviving to recount the tale. In an ironic twist of fate, Ahab is last glimpsed entangled in the harpoon lines once intended to strike down his nemesis, Moby Dick. "Bartleby" is the story of a young scrivener who steadily withdraws from involvement with the world until his employer's work requests elicit only the polite "I would prefer not to." In "Benito Cereno," the slaves aboard the San Dominick, viewed as little more than tamed animals by the ship's captain, Benito Cereno, successfully carry out a complex plot to overthrow their captors. "The Paradise of Bachelors and the Tartarus of Maids" offers a clash of opposites with sketches of the hedonistic lifestyle enjoyed by a circle of bachelors and of the dreary existence led by female workers in a paper factory. Finally, in Billy Budd, Sailor, a parable of good and evil published posthumously in 1924, the eponymous, innocent young seaman is unable to defend himself against a wrongful accusation and is sent to his death forgiving his sentencer. Works of Herman Melville is a volume to be treasured by all lovers of great literature. N° de réf. du vendeur 12092502
