Ford, all of these questions are answered and more. Ford draws on his considerable knowledge gained during years of experience as a carpet designer and export executive to show how to recognize the different structural and design features of oriental rugs and carpets. Here, for the first time, the full range of designs used throughout the Orient, from the Balkans to Peking, is grouped not according to place of origin but according to the essential characteristics of the designs themselves. Thus, all carpets featuring the Herati pattern, or all those classified as prayer~rug or garden designs~ whether historical or modern examples~will be found together in their appropriate sections; geometric (rectilinear) designs are separated from floral (curvilinear) designs; and the few~though universally used~border designs are discussed in a separate chapter. This approach illuminates the cultural background of each design, revealing at once the similarities and the differences between the interpretations of the various carpet~weaving areas. The modern carpet~producing areas of the Orient extend from Albania and Rumania in the West, across Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus, Turkestan Afghanistan, northern India and Pakistan, Tibet and Nepal, and finally into China. The author deals effectively with the ethnographical influences that have entered into the organization and development of all important carpet designs. Yet this book essentially concerned with the present ~ with the many millions of oriental carpets that are to be found in Western shops and warehouses today. It contains illustrations of representative examples of the carpet types currently woven in the Orient, together with descriptions of their key characteristics~the construction, the materials used, the typical sizes and color ranges~and the clues which enable an expert to establish a rug's precise origins. The Introduction provides an account of the general history and essential characteristics of oriental carpets, while the later chapters give a balanced appraisal of the qualities of the modern production of any one town, village. or tribal area.
