More than 300 years ago the Ming dynasty, the last native Chinese imperial house, fell before rebel onslaughts, made a short~lived attempt at restoration in the south, then yielded finally to the invading Manchus. Writing in the 1690s, K'ung Shang~jen was able to gather the recollections of survivors. Out of these and a multitude of documentary accounts he constructed a great historical play in the elegant southern Chinese style. Plays in this style ran to great length, but with his rich content K'ung Shang~jen is never dull. With compelling vividness he recreates confrontations between loyalists and those who would sell out to the newest master; nostalgic scenes of dalliance in riverside pavilions, with wine and poetry and beautiful girls; desperate stands on battlements of beleaguered cities; moving rituals of commemoration for the lost imperium. K'ung's personae include gallant generals and sycophantic ministers, court musicians and singing~girls, and a pair of appealing young lovers. He contrives no facile ending, but imbues his stirring action with overtones of the rich philosophy of quietism. The Peach Blossom Fan has been a play more often read than performed in China in recent decades. The explicit stage directions and evocative nature of the arias themselves (no sets were used on the traditional Chinese stage) combine to make reading an unusually satisfying experience. Sir Harold Acton, who collaborated with the late S. H. Chen in making this translation, has captured in his lively English the spirit and nuances of the original.
