Janet Hoskins provides both an ethnographic study of the organization of time in an Eastern Indonesian society and a theoretical argument about alternate temporalities in the modern world. Based on more than three years of field work with the Kodi people of the island of Sumba, her book focuses on Kodi calendrical rituals, exchange transactions, and confrontations with the historical forces of the colonial and postcolonial world. Hoskins explores the contingent, contested, and often contradictory precedent of the past to show how local systems of knowledge are in dialogue with wider historical forces.
Arguing that traditional temporality is more complex than many theorists have realized, Hoskins highlights the flexibility and relativity of local time concepts, whose sophistication belies the cliche of simple societies living in a world outside of time.

Based on more than three years of fieldwork with the Kodi people of Sumba, it examines indigenous temporal concepts in calendrical rites, exchange transactions, and encounters with the colonial and national state. Janet Hoskins explores the various ways the past is represented in narrative, objects, and action, to show how a complex ancestral heritage has been changed in the contemporary context. The confrontation between local systems of knowledge and wider historical forces brings out the contingent, contested, and often contradictory ways the past is used as precedent. In the precolonial period, the calendar of planting and ceremonial events was set by the "Lord of the Year," a priest who by synchronizing social activities was the symbolic author of the Kodi polity. His power contrasted with that of headhunters and war leaders who, as organizers of the resistance against colonial forces, were later represented as heroes in the national struggle. Traditional ceremonial activities operated with notions of time which are now challenged by monetary values and a linear, progressive concept of "history." The "New Order" of time in Suharto's Indonesia of the 1970s and 1980s has eroded the priest's authority through conversion and the imposition of a universal bureaucratic calendar, but traditionalists struggle to preserve local autonomy by insisting on some respect for older notions of temporal order. Arguing that traditional temporality is more complex than many theorists have realized, Itoskins highlights the flexibility and relativity of local time concepts, whose sophistication belies the cliche of simple societies living in a world outside of time. By historicizing the techniques and consequences of time~keeping, she reveals that calendars are more than "primitive classification"~they are instruments of historical practice.
