The Arabs during a thousand years or more produced one of the richest and most extensive literatures of the world, embracing fine poetry (of the fierce desert life equally with the sophistication of royal courts), belles lettres (learned essays, satires, de arte amoris), religious, mystical and philosophical writings, and huge compendia of history, biography and geography. For sixty years, the best account in English of this vast output has been, by universal consent, R. A. Nicholson's Literary History of the Arabs; its supremacy will long remain unchallenged. That it is a book full of erudition and high critical judgement goes without saying; its author is also a poet-translator of rare excellence.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. xxix, 506 pages. 215 x 138 mm. "A Literary History of the Arabs" prepared especially for the students of Arabic, occupies an eminent place in the literary field. The author strictly revised and presented it without alteration. In this book the chief aim of the author is to sketch in broad outlines what the Arabs thought, and to indicate as far as possible the influence which molded their thought. As the work especially devoted to the literature, almost all poetic conditions relating to the pre-Islamic time and after the Islamic period explained in detail. Reynold Alleyne Nicholson, or R. A. Nicholson (August 18, 1868 ? August 27, 1945), was an eminent English orientalist, scholar of both Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism, and widely regarded as one of the greatest Rumi scholars and translators in the English language.Son of paleontologist Henry Alleyne Nicholson, Nicholson was born in Keighley, Yorkshire, England and died in Chester, Cheshire, England. Educated at Aberdeen University and the University of Cambridge, Nicholson became lecturer in the Persian language (1902?26) and Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at Cambridge (1926?1933). He is considered a leading scholar in Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism who exercised a lasting influence on Islamic studies He was able to study and translate major Sufitexts in Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman Turkish to English. Nicholson wrote two very influential books: Literary History of The Arabs (1907) and The Mystics of Islam (1914). N° de réf. du vendeur 006266
