The Sèvres porcelain in the Royal Collection ranks as the finest in the world. This volume, the first of a three-volume catalogue of the Sèvres belonging to Her Majesty, The Queen, is devoted exclusively to the Louis XVI service. The service was commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783. It was still only half-completed at the time of the King's execution ten years later. The bulk of the service was acquired by George IV in 1811 and thus passed into the Royal Collection, housed at Windsor Castle. The Louis XVI service was the most expensive service of soft-paste porcelain ever produced at Sèvres in the eighteenth century. Considering its exceptional character, it has been possible to reconstitute the history of its manufacture and to establish the precise contributions of the artists involved. A major part of the catalogue is devoted to the identification of the sources which served as models for the scenes drawn from antiquity and mythology reproduced in the reserves.

The catalogue of this collection will eventually appear in three volumes, of which this, the first volume, is concerned exclusively with one service. The Louis XVI service is the most famous and expensive service of soft-paste porcelain produced at Sevres in the eighteenth century. Commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783 for his personal use at Versailles, it would have taken over twenty years to complete. The King drew up in his own hand the time-table for its production, and as each year's quota was completed the pieces were exhibited at the end-of-the-year sales of Sèvres porcelain staged in the Sovereign's private apartments in the palace. By 1793, when the King was executed, only half the service had been completed. One year later it was sold by the French Revolutionary Government, and in 1811 the majority of pieces were purchased by King George IV. One feature which distinguishes this service from all others is the reserves painted with scenes of classical and mythological subjects. The major section of this book is devoted to the identification and illustration of their sources, of which about two-thirds have been traced. Though some are based on drawings, most are copied from engravings. They form an anthology of prints which were both popular and available during the last quarter of the eighteenth century. This section is preceded by a chapter on the history of the service discussed in relation to others made in the eighteenth century, on its role as a royal showpiece and on the innovatory character of its decoration. Consideration is also given to the technical qualities - and occasional lapses-revealed by an analysis of the individual pieces. Considerable success has attended the attempt to identify the components making up the service among the many pieces recorded in the surviving ledgers of the Sevres factory. All the evidence is published, and a chronological sequence based on this evidence has been drawn up. The analysis of these ledgers has brought to light anomalies in the dating of Sevres - which are not restricted to the Louis XVI service. It has also allowed identification of the individual artists who painted the reserves and the analysis of their styles. The section concludes with biographical notes on the eight artists and eight gilders who worked on the service. N° de réf. du vendeur 1577B
