Synopsis

This work is intended both as a students' textbook at final-year undergraduate and postgraduate level, and for use by engineers in industry who wish to ask the question 'why', rather than simply 'how', a particular approach is used in considering different antennas. Unlike most other works on the subject of antennas, both wire and aperture antennas are covered here in approximately equal detail and from as unified a standpoint as possible. Furthermore, Dr Maclean has adopted a quantitative approach, which is particularly economic in terms of a student's time, rather than a descriptive one. Thus, although the book is in no sense exhaustive for any of the antennas which are considered, it fulfils the author's aim to combine a physical understanding with a quantitative outlook. The result is this exceptionally thorough and unique treatise which is a reflection of Dr Maclean's lifetime involvement with electromagnetism.
